In consideration of the speed with which his conducting career developed as well as the ever-increasing number of guest directions abroad, it is not surprising that Mengelberg did not find more time to compose in his hectic life.
His compositional ambition was not sufficient for him to give up his vacations as Gustav Mahler regularly did. Mengelberg remained an occasional composer – a good one – who only wrote music for befriended relations and for festive events for the Royal Family.
